James Puckle designed this engineering masterpiece in 1718 as a naval defensive weapon to help British vessels fight back against Ottoman pirates that used quick little boats that could not be effectively engaged with large cannon. Puckle’s gun was a 9-shot repeater of about 1.25″ bore on a flexible swivelling mount which could easily track the fastest of marauders.
The Puckle's firing mechanism incorporated some clever functionality to allow a fast and smooth rate of fire. The gun was demonstrated in public in 1772 firing 63 shots in 7 minutes – quite a feat when you think of how early this gun was designed.
After being turned down by the Royal Navy, only two guns were purchased by a private individual for an ill fated expedition to the West Indies.
The Puckle Gun also had the ability to fire round and square projectiles. The reason behind the two shapes of projectile was that the round ones were for use against Christians and the square for use against 'infidel' Turks!
This Scratch Built Brass Model is a fantastically detailed model of the gun set on a wooden tripod. The whole thing sits atop a round wooden display plinth with green baize. A great item steeped in history with a fantastic story attached to it. Ideal for the study or something for a grand desk.
