featuring a distinctive three dimensional pilchard Fish handle that is moulded directly onto the lid, paired with a ribbed texture along the ceramic body and hand-painted fish and green floral & foliage accents.
These dishes were originally designed specifically for serving sardines at the dinner table to conceal the oily tin cans they were sold in, preventing nasty oily stains on tablecloths.
Many of these fluted styled dishes were manufactured by historic porcelain factories in Austria, Germany, and Czechoslovakia between the 1890s and 1920s. Today they are favoured as whimsical trinket or vanity boxes.
Makers mark to the base with '405' on the inner lid.
