A fantastically decorative Late Victorian Mercury Glass Witches Ball.
The sphere is handblown and silvered, hence the slightly uneven surface and foxing to the mercury glass.
Witches Balls are associated with numerous superstitions. They were often hung in shop windows in the 18th and 19th Centuries, to ward off evil spirits. It was thought that witches could be entrapped by their own reflection!
It has a decorative ring to the top, so can be hung in a variety of settings. Very collectible, at any time of year but particularly at Christmas and during the winter months.
